Coffee is one of those staple beverages that so many people across the country have a love and appreciation for. Among the other things, one thing that makes coffee such a crowd-pleaser is the versatility it offers. Saying you’re a “coffee drinker” can mean all kinds of things since there are so many different ways to enjoy it. If you’re interested in giving iced coffee a try and want to be able to make it at home, here are five tips that will ensure your results are delicious.

Use Your Single Serve Coffee Machine

Many people now own single-serve coffee makers because, let’s face it, they make life a whole lot easier, specifically when you’re in a rush. Brewing a great coffee or espresso is quick and easy using these machines. But here’s something you may not realize, you can also use them for iced coffee.

For iced coffee lovers, the Nespresso machine can provide a bold and tasty beverage ideal for cooling you off on a hot day. All you need is 4-5 oz of cold milk, the coffee capsule of your choice, and ice. Just pull your espresso shot as you normally would, then add it to a tall cup that is filled with ice cubes. Next, you can froth the cold milk and then add it to the cup. It takes mere minutes, and you’ll have a coffee shop quality cold beverage.

If you’re using the Keurig machine, some come with a “Cold” setting, so you can select this mode. Again, you’ll need a cup full of ice.

Use a Bold Roast to Get the Best Flavor

Another tip has to do with the coffee beans you use. Because you will be adding a lot of ice to your beverage, it will water down the flavor. This is why you want to choose a bolder roast than you normally would drink. Choose a medium or dark roast to enhance the flavor. You can reserve the light roasts for hot coffee.

If you don’t have any bold coffee beans on hand, then you can always increase the ratio of coffee grinds.

Use Coffee Iced Cubes in Place of Regular Ones

Those who make iced coffee regularly probably already know this tip, as it’s really handy. Make a large pot of coffee, let it cool completely, and then pour it into an ice cube tray. You then have individual coffee cubes that you can use in place of regular ice cubes if you want. This ensures the flavor isn’t watered down.

Toppings and Mix-Ins Are a Must

Coffee shops are known for all the added touches on their various concoctions, and there should be nothing stopping you at home. It’s all about being creative and pairing different flavors. Mix-ins are ingredients you put into the coffee itself, and then toppings finish off the masterpiece.

Some of the most popular mix-ins and toppings include:

  • Ground cinnamon
  • Chocolate shavings crusher cookie pieces (very fine pieces)
  • Whipped cream
  • Frothed milk
  • Caramel or chocolate sauce/syrup
  • Raspberry or strawberry syrup
  • Alcohol (Bailey’s, Kahlua, Amaretto, vodka, schnapps, whiskey, rum, or spiced rum)

If you’re entertaining guests, these toppings and mix-ins are a great way to elevate the beverage you serve them and make them feel fancy.

Brew Coffee in Advance

The final tip is to brew a pot of coffee that you can then pour into a large jug that you leave in the fridge. You can then pour a cold brew anytime you like. Just add ice and sweetener (if desired). This can last in the fridge for 2-3 days.

Iced Coffee That Tastes Store Bought

All of these tips will ensure that the iced coffee you make at home is as perfect, if not better, than what you’d find at the coffee shop.
