Motorcycle camping is getting to be very popular since it gives you so much freedom and gets you off the beaten path. There are some things that must be planned ahead, however, so you can get the most out of the trip. In this article, we will go over some of the essentials to have so you know what you are getting into and can plan out an epic camping trip.
1 – Safety gear
Riding a motorcycle is relatively safe, but there are some dangers that you have to be prepared for so you can stay safe. For instance, you need to wear the right clothing and accessories to make sure if you do get into an accident that you are protected.
The most important element is your helmet. Make sure that it is certified by the DOT so you can be sure that it was tested and will protect you in an accident. You may also want to consider a Bluetooth motorcycle helmet so you can communicate easily with your camping partners.
In addition to the helmet, make sure to wear anti-abrasion clothing for a jacket and pants in case you go into a slide. This could be leather or synthetic material that protects you. Gloves are also essential since it can get cold if they are exposed but also give you protection in case of a slide as well.
Boots should also be worn as they give you stability. Make sure that they are high boots that go past your ankle for added protection.
2 – Saddle bags & more
You will need to pack everything that you will need for clothing, an emergency kit, and the camping itself. This means that you will need to have some saddle bags and other carriers. There are saddle bags that give you a lot of space to put things for your camping trip even including the tent itself if you have to bring your own.
There are other types of carrier bags that can be put on the handlebars and are ideal for something like your emergency kit with first aid gear. Then, there is an even bigger bag that locks onto your gas tank and sits in front of you. You can fit a lot into that bag if you pack it wisely.
3 – Drinking water
It is important that you have plenty of drinking water for your trip. Make sure to bring a water bottle but go beyond that. You will probably have access to a fresh water source such as a stream, but it is not likely drinkable. Bring along a water filtration system so you can be sure to always have enough water.
